I have tried countless weight loss remedies on the market in the last 15 years. As each year passes new products come out on the market every day.
I was always upset when after the first ten pounds is shed, either the pounds come back on two fold or no more weight is lost. I was thinking of the loss of money and the feeling of being scammed yet once again.
It wasn't until I read the following article that I realized the health risk can be far greater than the loss of a few bucks.
It made me think about the commercials that are on t.v. once in awhile. Like the acid reflux commercial with the purple pill. It promises to ease your troubles, and then lists all the side effects that make your skin crawl just hearing them. Sure they have to list the side effects and I realize that they are stating that they could happen and not necessarily will happen to you, but how could any ailment be so bad that one would risk the chance of trying the medication to trade it for worse side effects?

I think the following article will shed some light on a few misconceptions we may have. I never realized that something such as an herbal remedy or a "natural" product could be hazardous to your health if you are currently ingesting other supplements or medications. Make sure you are informed before you decide to take your next option towards weight maintenance.

Dangerous Weight Loss Methods
Copyright 2005 Adam Waxler

We’re all looking for that magic pill. You know - the one
that we can take and lose weight without really trying!

What would you give up to be skinny? How about your health?
Well, some of the methods of weight loss may cost you
exactly that. Before you decide that the way to lose weight
is to follow one of the below regimens, take a second look.
Do your research and be sure that you understand the risks.

Are you considering one of these dangerous weight loss
methods?

*Prescription diet pills

Amphetamines are available only by prescription, and most
doctors are leery of handing them out these days. While
they do suppress appetite, you learn nothing about healthy
eating, you don’t change your eating habits, and you are
likely to gain the weight back the moment you stop taking
them. In addition, they can be habit forming. The side
effects include high blood pressure, heart arrhythmia,
sleeplessness, hallucinations and delusions.

*Ephedra

This all natural Asian herb is found in many herbal
remedies and weight loss powders. It has a powerful
appetite suppressant effect, but has been implicated in
over 70 deaths.

*Phentermine Fenfluramine-phentermine (fen-phen)

Fen-phen was a popular weight loss supplement in the 90’s
until it was implicated in deaths due to heart-valve
damage. Phentermine alone is still sold in many weight loss
aids. The side effects include headaches, dizziness, heart
arrhythmia, high blood pressure and insomnia.

*Laxatives

One of the popular home remedies, used for purging. Regular
use and abuse of laxatives can result in low potassium,
arrhythmia, and pancreatic damage.

*Artificial Sweeteners

Aspartame, the most commonly used artificial sweetener, has
been implicated in multiple lawsuits alleging damages that
include blindness, seizures and brain damage.

*Smoking

Afraid you’ll gain weight if you quit smoking? The National
Institute of Diabetes says that you’d have to gain 100-150
pounds to match the health risks you invoke by smoking.
Instead, set up healthy strategies to help you deal with
food cravings and put down the cigarettes.

*Purging

Like laxatives, purging by forcing oneself to vomit or
taking emetics can have very damaging effects on health.
Depletion of nutrients like potassium and vitamins, damage
to the esophagus from stomach acids, and esophageal rupture
are all possible side effects.

*Diuretics

Taking diuretics encourages your body to rid itself of
fluids - including vital electrolytes. The depletion can
lead to dehydration, and cause your body to start retaining
water, starting a vicious cycle. Repeated or prolonged use
of diuretics can lead to kidney damage and serious
electrolyte imbalances, which may result in kidney or heart
failure.

*Herbal Remedies

We have a tendency to equate ‘herbal’ with ‘harmless’, but
say nutritionists, this isn’t always the case. Remember
that many medications are derived from herbs, and because
of the lack of regulation, dosages of active ingredients
can vary widely from one manufacturer to another. Below is
a list of some of the most common ingredients found in
herbal weight loss powders, along with cautions about their
effects in certain conditions.

Ephedra (ma huang, ephedrine, ephedra extract, epitonin,
ephdra sinica and sida cordifolia) should not be taken by
people with heart, thyroid or kidney disease, or with
hypertension

Cascara and Senna should not be taken by people taking
diuretics (both are often found in herbal weight loss teas)

Selenium and Capsaicin should not be taken by people with
bowel or digestive disorders

Kava should be avoided by people with mood disorders who
are taking mood altering medication, and people with
Parkinson’s disease.

Gingko biloba, licorice root, and dong quay should not be
taken by people who are taking blood thinners or
anti-coagulants.

While weight loss is a worthwhile goal, guarding your
health is an even more important one. Be sure that whatever
weight loss method you choose it won’t lead to other
serious medical conditions.

Sometimes when you are trying to keep to a proper diet it is hard to think of nice meals to prepare that taste good. All of the programs that are out there like Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers have their own meals but you can't gain access to them unless you join. There are plenty of recipes you can find online though if you have the time to surf.
Here is one that I found that is particularly tasty.

Eating to Lose Weight? Yum!
"I still basically eat clean good food and watch my calories. My idea of cheating now is a huge bowl of low-carb cereal with fruit."
"Never, ever give up on the thought of a 'thin you.' Always have the thin-you vision in your head. It's attainable."
Eating to lose weight does not mean eating without pleasure. Here's an example:

Ryan Benson's Portabella "Pizzas"

4 whole Portabella mushroom caps (about 5" each), stemmed removed
1/2 c low-fat marinara sauce
1/2 c lean turkey Italian sausage, cooked, drained and crumbled
4 T shredded fat-free mozzarella cheese
2 t freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 T chopped fresh basil

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Wipe the mushrooms clean of any dirt. Place them on a baking sheet, gill side up. Spoon sauce over each cap, then sprinkle on sausage and cheeses. Place in the oven and bake for 6 to 8 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Garnish with fresh basil.

Why is it that fad diets always seem to catch people's eye and sell regardless of the fact that so many people know that they are not real? It is human nature to want to have everything fast and easy. There is always that eternal hope that this next new fad may have the missing key ingredient the last one you tried didn't have, and then you would be set. Or like I have said, even if this helps me to take off the first 10 pounds, then I will be that one step closer and it will be easier for me to maintain my weight in the way I really know I should be doing(yeah, you know, proper diet and lots of exercise and sweat!)
It's funny too. In the summer I use the excuse I don't want to do any exercise except swimming because it is too hot, and I hate sweating almost more than anything on this planet. Then winter comes and it is the perfect time to exercise because you won't sweat profusely(you would agree if you ever saw me on a treadmill), and yet you still can't seem to drag your lazy butt off that couch. So what is the solution?
Motivation. What gets you motivated? I have found a buddy who won't let me be lazy. We have set up a schedule, and found the perfect place that offers all the work out equipment we like(a track to walk around indoors, a pool, and an exercise bike), for an affordable price. When our time comes. She is at my door and doesn't take any of my excuses.
Well the following is an article that talks about fad diets. I thought I would post it in here to remind us of our goals to keep to a life style change and not opt for the fast and easy track.

Why fad diets don’t work!
Copyright 2005 Adam Waxler

The answer is simple...fad diets are not natural.

Fad diet is the term that describes an array of diet
approaches used to temporarily lose weight through unsafe
and unrealistic methods. Quick fix programs do not
work...although millions of dollars are spent each year.
These programs offer a quick loss of weight but sadly the
weight is gained right back because people return to their
old eating habits and old life style.

There are many kinds of fad diets. Avoid those types of
diets that recommend a certain nutrient, or combination of
foods encouraging you to loss weight fast. Fad diets do
not teach lifestyle habits for long-term weight management,
they do not help people gain the will power to change a
lifestyle with another.

Diets promoting a very low calorie system, approximately
1,000 to 1,500 calories per day and with no exercise
program cause the body to become less efficient at burning
fat, making it easier to store fat and regained weight each
time a diet is stopped. In the long run this fad diets
makes a person fatter instead of leaner. Ultimately these
fad diets are not safe.

Only your weight and exercise level determines the number
of calories that is right for your diet program and only
healthy lifestyle habits will maintain long-term weight
control. Healthy lifestyle habits include regular exercise,
behavior modification, and a healthy, nutritious diet with
a wide variety of foods.

People should be aware of their health problems before
engaging in a diet program. All diets should include a
warning to check with a specialist before trying a diet.
Also most fad diets make no mention of physical activity,
which is essential in the process of weight loss and some
of these diets can actually harm one’s health.

The majority of fad diets involve a 10 day to 1 month
period in which your diet is restricted to a select
collection of bad-tasting, inconsistent health foods or
recipes. The fads diet is generally advising you to
completely avoided fats.

Due to water loss from this period, as a reaction to the
starvation process, you will quickly lose weight. And, as
you continue to starve, your body starts working in order
to keep up with the energy needs. But you are still not
burning fats and as you avoid fats in your diet, your body
will try to preserve the fat that it has in its store. And
if you continue your diet up to a month your body will burn
its stored fats having no other alternative to stay alive.

After this period the dieter starts getting weaker and he
is not able to feel well and perform its normal duties
because it requires a lot more effort and time for the body
to produce energy from fat rather than from muscle.
At a certain time the dieter is back to his normal eating
habit but it will take some time before the reconstruction
of your muscle occurs and during this time, the body
stores most of the food intake as excess fats. Therefore at
the end of the reconstruction process, the dieter is back
to his initial weight gaining back the weight he lost in
the starvation process and little bit more.

A diet regards the proper nutrition for a normally
developed human and it should contain vitamins, minerals,
proteins, carbohydrates AND fats. An imbalanced process may
cause starvation or excessive reserves of body fat.

By using fad diets in your weight loss process your body
will experience both starvation and weight gain in a short
amount of time.

Isn't Halloween just the worst holiday? Actually for what I am referring to, they are all bad. It is the junk food factor. I have already had to go and buy second bags of junk because the first bags I bought never made it to Halloween!
I am really bad for candy and chocolate bars. I don't think I will ever grow out of it. I started off thinking I was doing alright since I only had the snack size bars and a handful was only the equivalent of a whole big one. But they kept calling to me from the cupboard!
I have started reading the contents of all food I ingest. Unfortunately though alot of Canadian made products don't have labels on them. I really should not be eating them so freely. My father once said that you should never eat anything they don't tell you what's in it. It should be illegal. I laughed at the time. But he may have a point.
Do we really know the value of the food we put into our systems? Are there any nutrients beneficial to our bodies or do we rely on taste factor alone? If sugar, and articfical flavours are the first few ingredients listed in the contents, you should think twice before eating too much.
The next article I think should better help you out with any questions or concerns you may have on keeping a healthy diet for yourself.

How to beat Nutrient Depletion and have boundless amounts of Energy
Copyright 2005 Andy Casasanta

To ensure that the Human Body runs at peak performance,
which means repairing muscle tissue and to fight off
infections, it needs to take in life sustaining nutrients.
These are essential nutrients, which are nutrients that
your body can't make on its own. The nutrients known to be
essential for human beings are proteins, carbohydrates,
fats and oils, minerals, vitamins, and water.

Protein: Protein is necessary for the building of new
muscle and the repair and maintenance of present muscle.

Carbohydrates: Starches and sugars are carbohydrates, they
are the main source of the body's energy. Common sources
of carbohydrates are rice, wheat, corn, and potatoes.

Minerals: Here is a listing of minerals and their vital
role in the Human Body.
-Folic acid: formation of red blood cells.
-Biotin: Prevents hair loss.
-Vitamin c: Necessary for healthy teeth, gums and bones.
-Calcium: Needed for bone and tooth formation.
-Phosphorous: Works together with calcium and must be
balanced to be effective.
-Magnesium: Needed for healthy muscle tone and healthy
bones and heart.
-Potassium: Important in keeping acid-alkaline balance in
the blood.
-Sodium: Regulates fluid and acid base balance.
-Sulfur: Vital for healthy skin, hair and nails.
-Iron: Essential for the formation of hemoglobin, which
carries oxygen from the lungs to every cell of the body.
-Zinc:aids in wound healing, growth, tissue repair, and
sexual development.
-Iodine: Essential in the formation of thyroxin - the
thyroid hormone which regulates much of physical and mental
activity.
-Copper: Iron cannot be absorbed without copper. Involved
in protein metabolism, in healing process and in keeping
hair's natural color.
-Manganese: Importantly involved in the metabolism of
carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
-Fluorine: Essential for bone and tooth building.

There are good fats and there are bad fats. Saturated fats
or the bad fats come from animal products should be kept to
a minimum. These are the fats that clog Arteries and are
potentially deadly. Essential fatty acids or the good
fats are Omega-3 fatty acids and Omega-6 fatty acids.
These are the fats that humans cannot synthesize, and must
be obtained through diet. The essential fatty acids or
good fats have many important functions throughout the
body. Which include.

-Energy production
-Brain Function
-Healthier Skin, Hair, and Nails.
-May help speed the healing of injuries.
-Many more

Water: Not a whole lot of explanation needed but here goes.
Water is involved in many chemical reactions in the body.
It also regulates body temperature, and to help eliminate
wastes. It is said that water makes up about 70 percent of
an adult's body weight.

Nutrient Depletion can be caused by many factors but the
main reasons seem to be a bad diet, certain medications or
diseases. Eating a well balanced diet will usually do the
trick. But for some, nutrient deficiencies will occur. A
multi-vitamin might help but the best course might be for
you to see your doctor. When in doubt, go see your doctor,
always. A physical exam and certain lab tests are
available to determine specific nutrient levels in the body.

Please note, the information in this article is for
informational purposes only and should not be used as a
substitute for the advice of a licensed physician. Again,
When in doubt, go see your doctor, always.

The more I read up on health related issues the more I realize that I am a very unhealthy person. You tend to not think about it as you go about your daily duties, until your body knocks you out cold. Then you go to the doctor, get some medication and continue on your way again. Nothing changed, nothing improved. Another trip will be in store shortly no doubt.
Now, I know I am overweight. Duh. All it takes is a look in the mirror. But there are so many underlying issues we ignore or plain just don't think are important. We are able to get up and go to work, look after our families, and make it to our next birthday. But that doesn't mean we are healthy.
The following article I found to be quite an eye opener for me. I have 11 of the 12 issues listed in this article. Ouch. But it is always nice to know that part of our health and welfare is the ability to learn from our mistakes, and to press on to improve ourselves in any way we can once we are aware. For those of us that cannot stomach certain food(brains, kidney, liver)it is nice to know there are alternatives. Enjoy! Here's to finding new recipes to incorporate for a better taste to a healthier choice of food!

The top 11 signs that suggest omega 3 Fatty Acid deficiency
Copyright 2005 David McEvoy

Do you need Omega 3 fatty acid in your diet? The simple
answer is yes. The question of the importance of Omega 3
fatty acids can be clarified by examining the medical
evidence regarding the benefits of this essential nutrient.

Omega 3 fatty acids are important building blocks for the
cell membranes. Omega 3 fatty acids play a role in the
neurological health of the human system. A significantly
reduced risk of heart and cardiovascular disease is a
well-documented benefit of having the correct balance of
Omega 3 in the diet.

Studies undertaken on the lifestyle of the Inuit (Eskimos)
prove that Omega 3 plays a critical role in maintaining
good health. The Inuit enjoy a diet rich in fish and other
marine wildlife, which provide Omega 3 in abundance.

Humans need Omega 3 fatty acids for optimum daily
functioning. Research shows that it is critical for
nervous system development.
Omega 3 also plays a crucial part in managing and
preventing disease. This essential nutrient is one of the
primary components of the brain, as well as the retina and
other nerve tissue. It can affect the signalling of cells.

Scientific studies on Omega 3 prove that it is a necessity.
Without Omega 3 in our diets, we find an increase in
allergies and arthritis. Other chronic diseases, including
heart disease and cancer, are all impacted upon when we
lack Omega 3 in our diets.

Continued research on this essential nutrient has shown
another benefit. We find that with the aid of Omega 3 fish
oil, we have a reduced chance of abnormal blood clotting
within the blood vessels.

Available evidence on the Omega 3 benefit indicates that
Omega 3 fatty acids should be included as part of a healthy
lifestyle.
Should your diet become unbalanced and your consumption of
Omega 3 drop to low, then you may experience several of the
following conditions:

1) Fatty food craving

2) Ear wax accumulation

3) Sun-induced headaches

4) Leg cramps caused by walking

5) Tightness across shoulders

6) Brittle fingernails

7) Low moods, irritability

8) Thin/thick cracked heel calluses

9) Poor/slow wound healing

10) Yeast / candida infection

11) Chronic inflammations

12) Dry skin, dandruff

Conclusion

If you find yourself suffering from any of the above
conditions, it may be due to an incorrect balance of Omega
3 and Omega 6 in your diet. Therefore, it is advisable that
you improve your Omega 3 intake by eating more of the foods
listed below.

Long chain Omega 3 fatty acids are found in:

• Oily fish and cold-water fish such as mackerel and
salmon: these are both excellent sources of the longer
chain fatty acid Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA). Small amounts
of EPA are also found in eggs.
• Pre-formed docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is found in animal
organ meat, such as brains, kidney and liver.
• There are various supplements available to increase Omega
3 fatty acid intakes, based on fish oil or flaxseed oil.
The below are also beneficial and rich in Omega 3:
• Plant oils e.g. soya, rape seed and especially flaxseed
oil
• Nuts and seeds e.g. walnuts and pumpkin seeds
• Dark green leafy vegetables e.g. spinach and broccoli

All these foods are a great source of Omega 3. It is
strongly recommended that you always try and increase your
Omega 3 intake through a healthy balanced diet,
incorporating some of the food groups from above.
If you are trying to obtain a therapeutic dose of Omega 3
to help alleviate a health problem, then supplementation
with a high-quality fish oil supplement may be preferable
due to the large doses required.

I like to mention all aspects of health on this blog since they relate to weight management in one way or another. If you get stressed, your body responds by holding onto any extra weight it has and not doing its job properly.
When you are stressed, your blood pressure increases and other body functions cease to work as they should. It is the start to a full body breakdown if left unattended.
We can't change certain situations in our outside environement but we can make sure that we do everything we can to ensure that our bodies and mind have the proper resources available to prolong our health.
The following article deals with a topic we have already discussed which is T'ai Chi. This article delves more into the therapy itself from a more scientific approach. Read on, I am sure you will discover alot of useful information to benefit your overall health.

High Blood Pressure and Tai Chi Therapy
Copyright 2005 Bill Douglas

Way back in 2003, the Journal of Alternative and
Complimentary Medicine’s Oct. 9th issue reported a study
finding that Tai Chi “could decrease blood pressure and
results in favorable lipid profile changes and improve
subjects' anxiety status. Therefore, Tai Chi could be used
as an alternative modality in treating patients with mild
hypertension, with a promising economic effect.” This
study laid out a way to save our society, perhaps billions
of dollars annually, and possibly save some patients with
mild chronic hypertension the potential negative side
effects of chronic lifelong medication. However, this
largely hasn’t occurred.

I caught a glimpse why when I was staying in the beautiful
mountain town of Otavala, Ecuador, with a woman known for
her knowledge of traditional Indian medicines. A tour of
young American medical students stopped here to listen and
learn from the Indian woman’s tour of her herbal gardens.
As I followed them, I asked a group of young bright medical
students if they were aware that Tai Chi was found to
reduce high blood pressure. One lovely young woman
replied, “Oh, yes, I’ve heard that, but I would never
prescribe it.”

I asked why, and she responded that she couldn’t because
she didn’t know if it would work. Although Tai Chi studies
do show that Tai Chi indeed helps lower high blood
pressure, it is true that it does not reduce it in every
person. However, it is also true that every drug
prescription does not work on every person either. I
suggested to the young medical student that she consider
that many times I’ve been to the doctor, and he’s pulled
out a prescription pad and explained, “Let’s give this a
try, and see how it works for you, and if it doesn’t do the
job, we’ll try something else.” Most of us are familiar
with this, and by the confused look on the student’s face,
I’m assuming her memory banks were bringing up similar
images.

So, why are our medical universities giving students the
impression that they should not be prescribing Tai Chi,
since we know it can help lower high blood pressure for
many, who if it is successful with them, can enjoy a
lifetime free of chronic and costly medications? And not
only do that, but offer a plethora of GOOD SIDE EFFECTS
including a stronger immune system and healthier
respiratory system. This is a deep and important question
we need to be asking as patients and consumers, and health
professionals must begin asking this question regularly in
order to fulfill the duties of their Hippocratic oath.
For, today we have even a much better understanding of Tai
Chi’s potential than we did a few years ago, so ignorance
or inconclusive data is not an acceptable explanation from
our medical universities that train our future doctors,
without teaching them about Tai Chi research, and what it
portends for their future patients.

Today, we are clearer on exactly why Tai Chi is such a
powerful therapy for high blood pressure sufferers. In a
March 17, 2005, article by the Mayo Clinic staff posted at
mayoclinic.com they lay out what a “stress response” is,
and the effects it has on the body. This is at the core of
high blood pressure problems and the physical changes
chronic stress responses illicite that creates or
aggravates hypertensive conditions.

In their article, they explain that a stress response, or
“fight or flight” reaction involves our pituitary gland
releasing adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which sets a
domino effect signaling other glands to produce additional
hormones, such as adrenal glands which flood the blood
stream with stress hormones, such as “cortisol” and
“adrenaline.”

When ordinary life’s daily frustrations trigger this effect
over and over again, the results can be damaging to the
mind and body. Many of us experience this domino effect of
triggers and hormones daily, which is why about 1/3 of
Americans, or over 90 million Americans, suffer from high
blood pressure.

Cutting edge scientists like Dr. Herbert Benson, President
of the Mind/Body Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical
Center in Boston, are discovering a stunning reality
through their research. In a wonderful article by Jeanie
Lerche Davis at WebMD Medical News entitled The Mysterious
'Medication' of Meditation
(http://my.webmd.com/content/article/25/1728_
57992.htm), she writes of how such researchers are
discovering that “meditation can indeed be medication –
creating long lasting physiciolgical effects that reduce
high blood pressure and even help unclog arteries to
reverse heart disease.”

Dr. Benson, who is also associate professor of medicine at
Harvard Medical School, sought to prove how this effect
could be shown objectively, and had five long-time
meditation practitioners take MRI brain scans while
meditating. Dr. Benson informed WebMD in the
aforementioned article by Davis, "There was a striking
quietude across the entire brain which was documented
through MRI . . . The areas of the brain that became active
from that quietude were those that control metabolism,
heart rate, etc., . . . We knew meditation caused a
relaxation response, but we couldn't prove it. We knew that
if you thought in a certain way, with repetition, that
physiologic changes would occur in the body. Here now is
proof that mind, in the form of repetition, is affecting
the brain, which affects the body . . . "

Stroke Magazine reported on a study funded by the National
Institutes of Health, conducted by Dr. Amparo
Castillo-Richmond, from the Maharishi University, more
specifically on high blood pressure afflicting black
people. The meditating group saw a reduction in the
thickness of one of the arteries that supplied blood to the
brain. Which indicates that blood flow is increasing. The
group only using diet and exercise saw their artery walls
getting thicker, which indicated that less blood was
flowing through to the brain. This finding led Dr.
Castillo-Richmond to make the profoundly exciting
assertion, "It's possible to reverse heart disease through
meditation."
In fact, not only hypertension, but up to 90% of other
illnesses sending us to the doctor are being caused by
stress, according to Dr. Herbert Benson. Which makes Dr.
Benson’s and Dr. Castillo-Richmond’s findings that
meditative techniques can so dramatically alter our stress
producing “fight or flight” response in healthy ways even
more wonderful.

Dr. Benson explains, that the relaxation response triggered
by repetitive forms [like tai chi, yoga, etc.] can result
in decreased metabolism, heart rate, breathing rate, blood
pressure, and also slower brain waves.” Benson asserts
that it is the repetitive nature of acts like praying the
rosary, yoga, or tai chi’s physical repetitive muscular
actions that provides the profound hope for reducing
anxiety, mild and moderate depression, anger and hostility,
hypertension, cardiac irregularities, and all forms of
pain, which are made worse by stress.

This concept of Tai Chi being an effective tool for
reducing or even avoiding incidence of high blood pressure
or other illnesses all together, is echoed elsewhere.
Mayoclinic.com also recommends Tai Chi for relaxation
training in an article entitled, “Relax: Techniques to help
you achieve tranquility” which also explains why relaxation
is important and what you might experience by practicing
tools that will help you relax.

They detail how you can improve body responses to stress,
such as: Slowing your heart rate; Reducing blood pressure;
Slowing your breathing rate; Reducing the need for oxygen;
Increasing blood flow to the major muscles; Lessening
muscle tension.

They go on to explain that practicing relaxation techniques
may help you experience: Fewer symptoms of illness, such as
headaches, nausea, diarrhea and pain; Few emotional
responses such as anger, crying, anxiety, apprehension and
frustration; More energy; Improved concentration; Greater
ability to handle problems; More efficiency in daily
activities.
So, time and time again as we begin to examine one
particular benefit of Tai Chi, such as lowering high blood
pressure, we see a whole universe of potential opening up
before us.

An article from Archives of Internal Medicine, as reported
on NBC’s local WCAU Health
(http://wcau-tvhealth.ip2m.com/index.cfm?pt=itemDetail&Item_
ID=112735&Site_Cat_ID=77) explained a Tai Chi research
program at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston
revealed a great deal. The article authors wrote,
"Overall, these studies reported that long-term Tai Chi
practice had favorable effects on the promotion of balance
control, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness and reduced
the risk of falls in elders . . . Cardiovascular and
respiratory function improvements were noted in healthy
people and those who had undergone coronary artery bypass
surgery as well as people with heart failure, hypertension,
acute myocardial infarction, arthritis and multiple
sclerosis . . . Benefit was also found for balance,
strength, and flexibility in older subjects; falls in frail
elderly subjects; and pain, stress and anxiety in healthy
subjects.” They add the actual ways that Tai Chi provides
these benefits are not well known.

The fact is that less than .5% of the National Institute of
Health’s budget goes to research alternative therapies,
leaving yoga, meditation, tai chi, massage, herbal therapy,
aroma therapy, and the entire massive field of alternative
health systems to struggle over .5%, or a little over $100
million of the $28 billion (approx.) annual budget. Given
the above studies, it boggles the mind that such a small
portion of the health research dollars are going to Tai Chi.

To recap, about 1/3 of the American population suffers high
blood pressure. Tai Chi is proven to be a beneficial
therapy that not only has no bad side effects, but
dramatically improves immune function, respiratory
function, lowers the incidence of anxiety and depression,
and profoundly improves the balance of practitioners. Tai
Chi does more, but for our purposes here these profound
realities are enough to show exactly why it is truly
unbelievable that Tai Chi is getting so little scrutiny in
medical research dollars, when it can save so many from
chronic suffering and perhaps some from a lifetime of
chronic costly medications.

It is time we all began to ask the question that all good
consumers should ask, “What is the best way/product for my
health?” If Tai Chi is that product, the next question is,
“Why isn’t every physician offering it as an option to
their patients with hypertension, as a prescription?” “Why
aren’t all insurance policies covering such prescriptions
for Tai Chi?” Ask and ye shall receive. We must become
informed and demanding health consumers, in order to get
the best health options available.

This article does not advocate self-treatment, and
encourages all to make health choices in conjunction with
their physician. However, if your physician is
close-minded to anything but a certain group of health
options, even when research indicates your choices may be
wider, than it is time to have a good talk with your
physician about possibly widening your options.

Do you know how some diseases and illnesses have the same symptoms? Why you need to get more than one opinion. When I was suffering from my gall bladder stones(for 5 years before a proper diagnosis)I went to 6 different doctors and it wasn't until I was totally almost incapacitaded in my abilities before the last doctor decided to give me an ultrasound. Simple, yet overlooked. It could have meant the difference between just getting medication to pass stones to actually having to get my gall bladder removed.
Often times we take medication for symptoms of one illness or another, only to find out the situation worsens or there is no effect at all. Some people go through their entire lives with pain and never get a name put to it. They just learn to live with it.
The following article brought a new disease to my attention and I realized that I may know some people who could have this and would have never been tested for it. Most of the medical problems I have had in my life I have had to research myself and ask the doctor to check me for it. Needless to say,(although I am a cynic when it comes to this)I don't trust doctors.

Diet changes involved with Celiac Disease

Celiac Disease or Gluten Intolerance

As discussed in my previous article, I cover the basics of
Celiac Disease, which include the effects of Celiac
Disease, symptoms and possible treatments. In this
article, I will go into more detail of the life of a Celiac
sufferer.

When I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, I was told that a
major lifestyle change was in order. Fast foods were out,
pizza, breads, pastas, most alcohols, especially beer, were
excluded from my diet. I became a label reader. You would
be surprised at what your are eating once you start reading
labels. Here is a little tutorial in label reading. The
list starts with the item that takes up the most weight,
and continues in order of content down to the smallest part
of the food. I stumbled across a great Website on foods to
avoid and foods that are allowed,
www.celiac.ca/egfdiet2.html#avoid.

Even family and friends have made adjustments to their
meals, to accommodate my allergy, when I am invited to
dinner. I am on first name basis with the health food guy
at my supermarket(Claudio). I now see this as a positive
thing in my life, because it has forced me to eat healthier.

Diagnosing Celiac Disease:

Recognizing Celiac Disease is difficult because some of its
symptoms are similar to those of other diseases. If a
doctor suspects a person has Celiac Disease, he or she will
probably order a blood test as a first step in diagnosing
the disease. Perhaps the best way to diagnose Celiac
Disease is by taking a biopsy, or a sample of tissue and
sending it to a lab. This is done through a procedure
called an Endoscopy. If you decide to stay awake through
this procedure, like I did, you will get to see your
stomach, stomach acids, and interesting things like that.

Feeling tired and lethargic all the time:

Celiac's will experience fatigue, more than someone without
the disease. Celiacs have a hard time digesting certain
vitamins due to the resulting damage of the small
intestine. When the villi are damaged, (villi are the tiny
hair-like projections in the small intestine) the body is
unable to absorb certain vitamins and fatigue sets in.
Talk to your Doctor about a supplemental vitamin program.

Symptoms of celiac disease:
Extreme fatigue
Abdominal bloating and pain
Gas
Chronic diarrhea
Weight loss
Foul-smelling stool
Anemia or low count of red blood cells

How Common Is Celiac Disease?
This number varies as expected but generally in the U.S. 1
out of 250 people have Celiac Disease. Celiac Disease is
also quite common in Italy, Ireland, Sweden and Austria.

In closing and some final advice:

If you have just been diagnosed with Celiac Disease and you
fear that you will not be able to live on a gluten free
diet, it is not as difficult as you think. Most major
grocery stores have a good range of gluten free products
found mostly in the Organic Food section. Sticking to the
regimen below, has been a big help to me, and I think you
will agree.

No fast foods. Certain fast food chains use bread crumbs in
their burgers and usually, the clerk cannot tell you what
is in the burger itself. Do not pick up the phone for
take-out, do not drink grain based alcohols, and be careful
of certain sauces and gravies. Wheat flour is used to
thicken them and rarely is there a substitute available. Do
not try unmarked foods to casually eat such as candy in a
dish. Pack your own lunch if you have to. Even salad
dressings may contain wheat or wheat products. These
simple guidelines have helped me tremendously. For a
complete list and diet advice talk to your doctor, and
listen to what they say!

What is the alternative? You may experience Iron
deficiency, Anemia, Vitamin deficiencies, and other food
sensitivities. This, in a nutshell has been my experience
with Celiac Disease. I might have left out some details, as
I am not a doctor. However, I am a Celiac sufferer and I
know what Celiac's go through. The information in this
article is for information purposes only. If you are
experiencing any or all of the symptoms mentioned please
see your doctor. The author cannot be held responsible if
you do not seek the advice from your health care
professional.

How well do you know your body? I thought I knew mine well until I chanced upon this article and decided to try Mary's steps even though it sounded a little corny to me at first. I was quite taken back when I realized that I have been ignoring a few things my body has been trying to tell me.
I tend to mess up my sleeping habits on a constant basis, which I thought was no big deal until I realized that it has contributed to alot of inconsistencies and malfunctions in my performance throughout my daily life. I lose concentration, I get irritable half way through the day, I lose energy before a task is done.
Now I know the lack of proper vitamins and minerals in my diet helps to contribute to that as well, but a proper regimented sleeping pattern is essential to the brains neurological functions.
It is hard in todays society to keep to a consistent schedule when we have such busy lives, but we owe it to ourselves to try. What good is it if we end up having a breakdown and are out of commission for good?
Here's to learning to truly listen to ourselves and to having a long fulfilling life!

How to Know Your Body
Copyright 2005 Mary Desaulniers

Do you know why King Henry V is seen as one of the most
celebrated and successful kings in English history?

He was a King who knew intimately what his people wanted;
as a young man, he defied his father's wishes by hanging
out at the local tavern( where he hooked up with the
infamous Falstaff ) and seemed to have whiled his youth
away laughing and drinking. But that was only what the
public eye perceived. What really happened was that the
tavern turned out to be the Best Education a Future King
could have. It was at the tavern that he learned the
language of the streets and it was this language that made
him a King in tune with his people because he understood
how the Common Man lived, what the Common Man had to face
and what the Common Man yearned for.

As King, he pursued this knowledge with vigilance. Under
disguise, he wandered through the streets striking up
conversations with everyone he met to learn first hand what
that person needed. What was his grievance? What was his
complaint? And from these, he formed his political policies.

Herny V can be a kind of model for our own body-kingdom.

How well do we know our bodies? Do we listen when our
muscles twitch or when our teeth are clenched? Do we know
why a vague, dark sorrow sits heavily on our chest? Or why
we are tormented by a relentless
sleeplessness that leaves our eyes foggy and our minds numb?

Some Henry V work can help us here.

Make a daily habit ( as Henry did) of listening to your
body.Do you know what your body wants or fears?

There are some steps you can follow here to help you
uncover what the body wants.

First, you need to find a spot where you can be comfortable
and relaxed for 15-20 minutes. Breathe deeply for 2-3
minutes, in and out, imagining as you do so that each
breath clears out any clutter that is inside your head.

Then gently but firmly, ask your body what it needs. And
when I say firmly, I mean firmly. You have to take your
body seriously and show your own seriousness about this
question in your voice.

Firmly, but gently ask "What do you want? What do you need?
Do you need more time? less stress? more loving moments,
fewer arguments? more exercise, less sugary food? more
sleep? less hurriedness?"
"What do you need,My Body?"

Remember: If you don't ask this question, WHO WOULD?

Then keep silent and just listen. Listen with every pore in
your body. Listen!
And the answers will come, a little bit hesitantly at
first, then in a rush, everything coming so fast and so
quickly that unless you have pen and paper in front you,
you will miss the catch. Jot everything down. Scribble them
down. Don't worry about spelling and don't censor anything.
Don't say to yourself,"No, that is nonsense." All nonsense
is sense to the subconscious mind. And you have to be
careful that you do not block out anything your body is
trying to tell you.

She's like a child who will tell all if she trusts that you
will listen and not scold.
Would the Common Man have revealed as much if he knew that
the man drinking with him at the local pub was THE KING?

You will be flushed at the end of the list--some of you
might write down 1 or 2 items; others might have a whole
page. But no matter, you have at least one thing, one
grievance made on your body's behalf.

Then your next step is the step you would take with any
child who has told you the truth. Honour her sharing. Thank
her for telling you the truth, bitter as it might be. And
show her how you will take steps to make amends.

If your list is a whole page long, select ONE
grievance--just ONE and tell your body that you will talk
with her again to find how you both can deal with the
problem and come to a collective solution.

We are not one, but many--- and this diversity makes us
better and more compassionate beings in the long run. So
use it to your advantage. Have a conversation with your
body. This conversation can easily become a life-long
friendship.
